Buta & Buti work with craftsmen and women around the world to design and make pieces for the home. Every product is carefully made by hand using age-old crafts. We print, weave and stitch to create individual handmade items. By combining beautiful, contemporary and unique designs with traditional craft we aim to support and help flourish the intricate work of small producer groups.

Our ethos promotes the belief that each product should come ‘from the hand to the home.’ Each block-print is carved from teak wood using hammer and chisel, each stitch is done by hand using needle and thread. What we hope to do is re-define the skill of the craftsman and woman and to re-ignite our love for the handmade.

Block-printing is one of the ancient crafts of India. In the Mughal times, royal tents would have been decorated with flower motifs known as ‘buta’ or ‘buti’. We work with traditional block-printers in the desert regions of Rajasthan and Kutch in north west India. Blocks of teak wood are hand-carved using hammer and chisel. These are then dipped in colourful dyes and transferred on to cotton to make beautiful repeat patterns.

Inspiration for our designs comes from combining the old with the new. Fun, unique designs are mixed with classic prints and patterns. From this we hope to decorate our homes and ourselves with contemporary pieces that retain the beauty of traditional craftsmanship. Homeware ranges from table linen to quilts, duvet covers to pillows and children’s pyjamas to cot quilts. If you would like to see our most recent collection please visit the Shop page…
